Habs ink Dale Weise to Extension

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that they have agreed on a contract extension with Dale Weise for 2 years for $2 million ($1 million AAV).

This is a very solid signing for Montreal. At the deadline when Montreal traded Raphael Diaz to Vancouver for Dale Weise, it seemed as a depth move that nobody thought would matter. In the end, Weise has proved to be a solid 4th liner with a lot of grit and can pot a few points, notably the overtime winner during the Tampa Bay/Montreal series, which seems so long ago. Outside of the overtime goal though, he was one of the Montreal Canadiens that really stood out.

The deal itself is a very low risk move. It will allow Weise to further develop his skills at the NHL level. As it stands currently, he is a solid 4th liner, with great work ethic. He can play on the 3rd line in an emergency basis. It’s known that he loves being on the Montreal Canadiens. The fact that he’s making only 1 million dollars per year makes this deal very safe and great for both parties. Great price and great deal for a great player. On the other hand, I think this spells the end for Travis Moen. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Habs look to trade him in the offseason for something.

$1 Million for a consistent, gritty, responsible 4th line forward that gives everything he can every shift. This is a deal that is really hard not to like.
